Friends/Family (Community) = Part 5 of our Intention Wheel™
Research as shown that community involvement and strong social connections are incredibly important in Blue Zones, which are areas where people consistently live longer and healthier lives. Blue Zones emphasize the power of community support, social networks, and spiritual practices in fostering longevity and well-being. The Blue Zones have been studying longevity for a long time. And in their studies they have concluded that social connections help people maintain thinking skills and slow cognitive decline as they age. Whether it's a heartfelt conversation with a friend, a supportive hug from a loved one or a shared laugh with neighbors, these connections fuel our health and sense of belonging and purpose.
Here's why community is so vital:
Longevity and Health:
Communities often exhibit strong social connections, which are linked to better mental and physical health outcomes, even slowing down cognitive decline as people age.
Social Support:
Having a strong network of family, friends, and neighbors provides crucial support during times of need, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose.
Shared Habits:
Blue Zones showcase the influence of social circles in shaping healthy habits. "Right Tribes," or groups that encourage positive lifestyle choices, can significantly impact longevity and overall well-being.
Economic Benefits:
Improved health outcomes within Blue Zones projects can lead to reduced healthcare costs, contributing to a stronger local economy.
It is my experience too that community is critically important. Community is anyone that we feel connection too, it can be: neighbors, family, friends, even places we frequent often where as they said on Cheers, “where everyone knows your name.” Commnity is about supporting each other. It is not us always getting supported or us always giving… it is an interdependent relationship. A life rich in social connections and support, are essential for living a longer, healthier, and more fulfilling life. But we dont have to live in a blue zone too have the benfits of community. We are responsible for creating our very own community whether that is family, friends, or neighbors… they all matter and our relationship with them matters too. Having a sense of community keeps us feeling like we belong verses lonely. It has us have a sense that we are not alone, instead a part of a larger group. Community gives us a sense of safety where we live, this too is critical to our sense of well-being. Is it time to cultivate your community?
